According to the Dove Global Beauty and Confidence Report of 2016, women's confidence in their bodies is on a steady decline, with low body esteem becoming a unifying challenge shared by women and girls around the world - regardless of age or geography. Eighty-five percent of women and seventy-nine percent of girls say they opt out of important life activities - such as trying out for a team or club, and engaging with family or loved ones - when they don't feel good about the way they look.
f/stop Project believes that is unacceptable!
For the last four years, we have been combating low self-esteem and confidence issues by organizing and implementing self-esteem and confidence building events throughout the year called “f/stop projects.” Armed with teams of volunteer photographers, makeup artists, hair artists, and community members, we partner with like-minded organizations in Southern Nevada to host f/stop Projects! These free events allow young girls and women from disadvantaged and/or underserved populations to get their hair and makeup done, take part in a professional photo shoot, and receive a beautiful portrait that reflects both their inner and outer beauty. To participant, each women is required to pen a short, positive narrative about who she is.
f/stop projects builds self-esteem and confidence, dispels negative beliefs about body image, and educates and inspires not only our participants, but the community as well by revealing that there is more than one definition of beauty.
f/stop Project derives its name from f/stop (Focal-Stop), the measurement of the aperture setting in a camera lens. The f/stop setting determines how much light is allowed to enter the lens and pass through to the camera’s sensor. We’d like to think that our organization allows light to enter and expose our participants for the beautiful women they are.
f/stop Project began in 2011 when founder, model, and photographer, Lisa Wright decided she wanted to do something nice for the young women in her community who were attending prom by offering them a free makeover and photo shoot. She called upon some of her talented friends in the fashion and beauty industry and held the first f/stop Project!
In 2013, f/stop Project was established as a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization. We promote confidence and self-esteem through portraiture; no program like it exist in our area, making us quite unique!
